Mampruli is spoken by the Mamprusi, mainly in the North East Region of Ghana, around Nalerigu, Gambaga and Walewale, and by communities across the borders in Togo and Burkina Faso. A count in 2004 put speakers at roughly 230,000.
It belongs to the Gur branch of Niger-Congo, in the Western Oti-Volta group, which makes it a close relative of Dagbani. Speakers of the two can understand one another in part.
Its alphabet needs three letters English does not use. A reference that quietly replaces ɛ, ɔ and ŋ with the nearest English letter is recording a different word. This one never does.
